Prom is next Saturday, May 9th at The Ranch Golf Club from 6:00 to 11:00 pm.

The prom is a milestone and we want your child's prom to be a truly magical evening!  Please help your child plan ahead and be safe.

  • Participate in your teen's preparations...dress, tux, flowers, etc.  It creates an excellent opportunity for you to start discussing prom details.
  • Talk to your son or daughter about your concern for their health and safety
  • Review the details for the evening...transportation, after hour activities, curfews.
  • Discuss your limits and guidelines.  What are your expectations?  Remember, every teen is different, and what worked a couple of years ago with a sibling, may not work today.
  • Be clear about your expectations regarding drugs, sex and alcohol.  Underage drinking is illegal, as well as possession of drugs.
  • Discuss internet safety and encourage your son or daughter to be careful of what pictures and messages they post on social media while at the prom and throughout the evening.
  • Know who's driving.  If you're renting a limo, speak directly to the driver and discuss how you expect an alcohol/drug free ride...there should be no stops made on the way to or from the prom.
  • Remind your son or daughter that under no circumstances, should they get into a car with a driver who has been drinking or using drugs!
  • Discuss peer pressure.  Remind your son/daughter that it's okay to say no to risky behavior.
  • Make sure to know who your teen's going to the prom with.  Invite their friends over for pictures beforehand.
  • If they will be attending an after-prom party, make sure to get addresses and phone numbers of those hosting the party.
  • Have your child call you if there are any change of plans.
  • Remind your teen that if they run into any trouble, you'll pick them up regardless of the time.

Discussing these safety tips before the prom, can help to ensure a fun, happy, safe and memorable experience!

Prom is next Saturday, April 19 at Villa Regusa in Campbell from 6:00 pm to 12:00 am.

HEY COMETS!  - Got a Facebook?  This year, Target will be giving away money to schools all over the country for one simple act:  a vote.  James Lick High School needs just 25 votes to earn a $25 donation from Target.  But, that’s only the beginning.  For each additional vote, our school will get $1 more.  So please remember that, although the gesture is small, the rewards are potentially huge!  Go to givewith.target.com to vote for our school once a week through September 21 or until Target has given away all $5 million.  Spread the word to your family and friends and help James Lick High School.  By the way, Silver Creek is #1 with $1300 dollars already!  Let’s get on the leader board, Comets!

In the past, James Lick has had a multicultural night every year to celebrate diversity. However, the tradition has died out and so this year Leadership would like to bring back the tradition and keep it going!

We've got a fun-filled agenda planned with cultural dances, songs, and a fashion show featuring traditional ethnic clothing! Schools from all over the district will be participating, including Evergreen Valley High School, Mt. Pleasant High School, and MORE!

In addition: Our own James Lick clubs will be selling cultural dishes like flautas, pozole, pancit, and more!

Tickets will be $2 in advance and $3 at the door. If you come to the event in a cultural outfit, your ticket will be discounted to $1!

Come on out and take a trip around the world this FRIDAY!!!

California High School Exit Exam(CAHSEE) is a requirement for high school graduation in the state of California, created by the California Department of Education to improve the academic performance of California high school students, and especially of high school graduates, in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics; public school students must pass the exam before they can receive a high school diploma, regardless of any other graduation requirements.

Students first take the test the beginning of their sophomore year. If they do not pass one or both of the two test sections, then they may retake the section or sections they have not yet passed.

If you are interested in preparing for the CAHSEE, Dr. Salgarino has graciously provided several study links to review for the CAHSEE in Februrary.

December 14, 2012

 Dear East Side Community,

The horrific school shooting that occurred today in Connecticut saddens us all.  Our hearts go out to the parents and families.  I want to assure all parents that we have in place safety and security procedures to protect our students and staff.  At this time, our crisis counseling teams are prepared and ready to assist students, parents and staff in dealing with this tragedy.  Additionally, our leadership and local law enforcement are working together to ensure the safety of our students and staff.

This is a good time for parents to discuss with their children the importance of speaking to a trusted adult concerning matters that they hear about in the media and online and, of course, if they hear of any student or former student making inappropriate or unsafe statements of intent to do harm on any of our campuses.

In closing, I would like to reassure you that all our staff are trained and well prepared to deal with campus safety, security and student needs.

 Respectfully,

 Chris D. Funk

Superintendent

We all know that these are difficult economic times.  Many of our James Lick families have lost their jobs, their homes, and their health insurance.  Without health insurance, it can be quite costly if your child ends up in an emergency room.  Does YOUR child have health insurance?

This week is Medi-Cal Awareness Week (Nov. 14-18).  Teachers will be asking students whether or not they have health insurance.  Our goal is to contact students who do not have insurance, and give them important information about the three different types of health programs offered by the state of CA - Medi-Cal, Healthy Families and Healthy Kids.   Many families can qualify for one of these programs, even those families with higher incomes.  If you want more information, or want to pick up an application, call the Student Support Center at 347-4460.

It's only $15. Bring cash or a check made out to James Lick High School

Any junior or sophomore can sign up to take it.

Parents are encouraged to register for School Loop services, a free service offered by the district. To register, parents need their child's ID number -- and, later, teacher verification of their account -- to view grades, attendance reports and assignments. The service is very popular with students, teachers and parents. Register today (link here).

Dear Seniors, class of 2011,

If you are planning to attend a four-year university in the fall, you must request an official transcript from Mrs. Alvarez, our registrar.

She has sent several transcripts to colleges for those students who requested them early.

If you will be needing a final transcript for college, come in to fill out a form or call her to confirm that your transcript was sent.  Your college acceptance is dependent on that final transcript from high school.  It is your responsibility to meet the school deadlines.

To contact Mrs. Alvarez, call her at (408) 347-4421

A new school immuzation law requires all students entering 7th through 12th grades in the 2011-2012 school year in California to be immunized with a pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine booster called Tdap.

James Lick is offering a FREE whooping cough immunization!

The Foothill Community Health Center will be on campus on Monday, May 16 from 9am-1pm.  Any student (and their siblings) can sign up.  All that's  needed is a parent consent form.  The consent forms will be mailed home and will also be available on campus.

Pertussis (whooping cough) FREE immunization:

Monday, May 16

9:00 am - 1:00 pm

                                                    Multipurpose Room

Pertussis is a very contagious respiratory disease that can be severe and last for months. The immunity received from either early childhood immunization or pertussis disease wears off over time, leaving older students and adults susceptible again to pertussis. Immunization with Tdap can protect students, schools and communities against pertussis.

The new requirement affects all students – current, new, and transfers – in public and private schools. The law has two phases:

  • For the 2011-2012 school year, all students entering into 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades will need proof of a Tdap shot before starting school.
  • For 2012-2013 and future school years, all students entering into 7th grade will need proof of a Tdap shot before starting school.

The prom is a milestone and we want your child's prom to be a truly magical eveing!  Please help your child plan ahead and be safe.

  • Participate in your teen's preparations....dress, tux, flowers, etc.  It creates an excellent opportunity for you to start discussing prom details.
  • Talk to your son or daughter about your concern for their health and safety.
  • Review the details for the evening...transportation, after hour activities, curfews, etc.
  • Discuss your limits and guidelines.  What are your expectations?  Remember, every teen is different, and what worked a couple of years ago with a sibling, may not work today.
  • Be clear about your expectations regarding sex, drugs, and alcohol.  Underage drinking is illegal, as well as possesion of drugs.
  • Know who's driving.  If you're renting a limo, speak directly to the driver and discuss how you expect an alcohol/drug free ride...there should be no stops made on the way to or from the prom.
  • Remind your son or daughter that under no circumstances, should they get into a car with a driver who has been drinking or using drugs (or texting, for that matter!)!
  • Discuss peer pressure.  Remind your son/daughter that it's okay to say no to risky behavior.
  • Make sure to know who your teen's going to the prom with.  Invite their frends over for pictures beforehand.
  • If they will be attending an after-prom party, make sure to get addresses and phone numbers of those hosting the party.
  • Have your child call you if there are any change of plans.
  • Remind your teen that if they run into any trouble, you'll pick them up regardless of the time.

Discussing these safety tips before the prom, can help ensure a fun, happy, safe, and memorable experience!

The news of the Japan earthquake and tsunami was devastating to the world.  Thousands of people are dead and many more are homeless.  The damage will run into the hundreds of billions of dollars.  We MUST help!

James Lick is joining more than 20 high schools in the Santa Clara County to help raise money for the victims of Japan.  One Dollar for Life is a youth organization that began three years ago at Los Altos High School to show teenagers the power they really have if they will just work together.  For just one dollar every year, students have changed the world!  Here are a few examples:

  • built a new school in Kenya,
  • raised 6,000 pounds of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank
  • built an engineered latrine system in Kenya
  • raised $20,000 for relieft projects after the Haiti earthquake
  • collected and sent 452 bicycles to Africa
  • bought 20 piglets to save 20 Nepalese girls from being sold into slavery
  • sent more than 500 pairs of tennis shoes to students in Malawi
  • built new classrooms for a villages in Nicaragua

If you gave only one dollar every year, you could say, "While in high school, I built four schools in the developing world, for about the cost of a latte!"

Join your fellow students and give one dollar for life!  A table will be set up at lunch time beginning, Friday, April 8.  See Freshmen President, Daryl Cristobal, or any Leadership student for more information.
