What's required for college?

  • Students must take either the SAT Reasoning or ACT plus Writing for all 4-year colleges
  • SAT Subject Tests are not required, but are recommended for the UC system. Some private/independent 4-year colleges may require them for certain majors

What are the SAT Subject Tests?

  • Series of subject tests in history, English, mathematics, Science, or foreign language
  • Scores are used to determine academic eligibility and exemptions from English and math assessment tests
  • Best time to take these tests is SPRING OF JUNIOR YEAR. Students who are taking AP courses should plan on taking the Subject Test in that area
  • The SAT Reasoning and SAT Subject Tests cannot be taken on the same test date; students must register for two different dates

When should these tests be taken?

  • Junior year in April, May, or June. Retake in senior year in October, November, or December

How do I register?

Tips

  • Register early for these tests. If you wait until near the deadlines for registration, testing sites fill up and ou will be assigned anywhere there is an opening, which could be in another city or county.
  • Do some preparation before taking these tests. Check out the SAT/ACT websites for practice questions. Test prep books are helpful too, but make sure they reflect NEW tests
  • If you're taking an AP/Honors course, take the SAT Subject test in that subject
